Canberra isn’t on the ocean, but those craving a hit of salty spray without travelling far can check out the Ocean Film Festival Australia. It features seven short films – five Australian cinematic premieres and two world premieres documenting the beauty and power of the ocean and the lives of the people who love it.
Tour director Jemima Robinson says the two and a half hour selection of films covers “everything to do with the ocean, above and below the surface”.
A couple of the films are from Australia. Swell Chasers is one of the world premieres, is about people who go in search of the biggest and most dangerous waves.
“The waves are enormous – I would rather swim with a shark!”
A Small Surfer Makes Big Waves – an Australian cinematic premiere – is about six-year-old Quincy Symonds, nicknamed the Flying Squirrel. The Tweed Heads local is a skater and surfer who only began the latter sport 18 months ago and has already attracted a lot of attention from surfers and social media and a number of sponsors.
