Stay strong: Lord Mayor’s COVID message for Parramatta

Parramatta (Tribune International, Parramatta Council Release, 28 July 2021); City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer has thanked the Parramatta community for their patience during the current COVID-19 outbreak and is urging continued cooperation after stricter lockdown restrictions were announced for the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA).

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian this morning said that only authorised workers, as defined by the NSW Government, are allowed to leave the Parramatta LGA for work, starting at midnight Wednesday 28 July. She also confirmed the Greater Sydney lockdown will be extended by four weeks to Saturday 28 August.

“This is a very difficult time for the Parramatta community but if last year proved anything it’s that we are incredibly resilient and overcome challenges when we stick together. We can do this,” Cr Dwyer said.

“My message to the people of Parramatta is to stay strong, please continue to follow the health advice and do not leave the LGA unless you are an authorised worker.

“I’d like to thank our community for their co-operation during this lockdown and encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon they’re eligible, in line with advice from NSW Health. I believe the more people who get vaccinated against COVID-19, the quicker life in the City of Parramatta can return to normal.”

Cr Dwyer also reiterated Council’s commitment to help the state and federal governments by making facilities available to support COVID-19 testing, vaccinations and other related services.

“Over the past 12 months, Council has provided support for a number of COVID-19 testing sites and is willing to provide further help or facilities, including for the vaccine rollout,” Cr Dwyer said.

It comes as Council announced a package of measures worth up to $2.9 million to assist local households and businesses impacted by the current COVID-19 lockdown. Initiatives that will operate for up to three months include parking concessions, rates and rent relief, and an outdoor dining fee waiver.
