The Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) welcome Australia’s vote in favour of the recent motion at the United Nations (UN) which seeks to recognise the Palestinian people’s right to their own state and demands Israel withdraw their illegal occupation of the Palestinian Territories. The resolution received an overwhelming majority of 157 votes in favour, seven abstentions and eight against.
The Palestinian people have been struggling for their right to self-determination and for their right to a Palestinian State since the first Nakba of 1948 where more than half a million Palestinians were forcibly evicted from their homes, never allowed to return. As the genocide in Gaza continues, it has become clear more than the ruthlessness of the Israeli regime when it comes to the people of Palestine. For over many years, Palestinians have been starved, bombed, forcibly displaced, and tortured while witnessing their lands invaded and occupied by Israeli settlers. These settlers, often backed by the Israeli government, continue to establish unauthorised settlements on Palestinian land, in direct violation of international law.
We call on the Australian government to continue to uphold international law and put measures in place to sanction Israel for its continuous war crimes against the Palestinians for over 76 years. Additionally, we demand Australia expel the Israeli ambassador who continues to advocate for the continued genocide in Gaza and recall Australia’s ambassador to Israel.
