AAM and ANIC Strongly Condemn the Blatantly Racist and Divisive Remarks made by Senator Hanson

Media Release, 28 Nov 2024 by AAM: The Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) are deeply concerned and condemn the blatantly racist and divisive remarks made by Senator Pauline Hanson in Parliament on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Across Australia, our diverse and multicultural society has worked tirelessly to strengthen social cohesion, but such racist remarks, like those made by Senator Hanson, the One Nation Leader, threaten to disrupt and undo these efforts.

Senator Hanson questioned Senator Fatima Payman’s eligibility to sit in Parliament, claiming her presence violates section 44c of the constitution, which prohibits members of Parliament to hold dual citizenship status. This is yet another racist smear campaign aimed at diminishing the presence and voice of diverse Australians in Parliament.

The One Nation leader has spent most of her time in Government dividing Australians through her racist remarks against Indigenous Australians, Asians, Muslims and Arabs. She was recently found guilty of a “racist attack” in the Federal Court under violation of the Racial Discrimination Act against Senator Mehreen Faruqi.

We are calling for an immediate inquiry into Senator Hanson’s position in Parliament, given her nearly two decades sowing of discord within Parliament and across Australia through her vile, bigoted, and racist remarks. This hateful and racist narrative being spewed by Senator Hanson and her followers has no place in Australia.

We stand in solidarity with Senator Payman, Senator Faruqi, and all Australians who have been victims of the racist and hateful rhetoric from Senator Hanson and her political party. Australia is a culturally and religiously diverse nation, and it is essential that our Parliament reflects this diversity in its representation.
