Ryan Gosling celebrates 35th Birthday at premiere of his film The Big Short

Ryan Gosling rang in his 35th birthday Thursday while attending the premiere of his latest film, The Big Short, on the closing night of the AFI Fest in Hollywood.

The smoldering star looked dapper as usual in a dark suit and blue tie, sporting tidy facial hair and occasionally throwing waves at fans while flashing his signature smile.

Gosling appeared at the premiere with costars including Christian Bale, Marisa Tomei, Max Greenfield and Steve Carell – who praised Gosling for his unexpected humor.

“Ryan Gosling is hilarious,” he declared to reporters. “He’s one of the those people that, he is so surprising with his choices. He’s a hard person to keep a straight face around.”

Gosling kept things a bit more serious on the red carpet, however, talking about starring in the film that addresses the housing bubble collapse in the mid-2000s that sparked an economic crisis. Gosling plays an outsider to the world of high-finance, and also serves as the film’s narrator.

When asked how he felt about improvising during filming, as director Adam McKay at times instructed the cast to do, Gosling admitted it “was a little more difficult because the terminology in the finance world is so dense and specific.”

“And it was a little different for my character because my character is the narrator of the script, as well as a character in it. So I have to break the fourth wall and introduce other celebrity cameos,” said Gosling, who walked the carpet sans partner Eva Mendes for the evening. “So it’s kind of like being the host of a talk show or something. It was very interesting for me.”
