Since taking office, President Donald Trump’s diplomatic strategies have reflected his business-oriented approach, starkly contrasting traditional political norms. In just the first few weeks of his term, his actions have sparked strong reactions from global powers and key allies in East Asia and the Middle East. His policies on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, his controversial interest in Greenland, and his stance on trade with major economies have raised concerns among nations that typically advocate for stability and cooperation.

A Businessman’s Approach to Diplomacy

It is becoming increasingly clear that Trump lacks the nuanced diplomatic skills traditionally required for managing global affairs. Instead, he approaches international politics with a business mindset, prioritizing monetary and commercial gains over strategic alliances and long-term geopolitical stability. Given his background as a real estate mogul, this perspective is perhaps understandable. While some admire his decisiveness in addressing longstanding political and trade issues, world leaders perceive his actions as reflecting an autocratic and unilateralist approach. Remarkably, he issued more than a dozen executive orders on critical domestic and international issues within just two weeks of assuming office, bypassing Congress entirely.

Overlooking China’s Growing Influence

Trump’s protectionist trade policies fail to account for the rapid economic rise of China. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the United States has been the world’s dominant superpower. However, China has steadily expanded its global influence through aggressive economic strategies, technological advancements, and military modernization. Beijing’s expansive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has cemented its role as a major global trade partner, particularly in regions traditionally neglected by the USA.

Despite these shifts in the global balance of power, Trump’s policies have leaned towards economic isolationism, seemingly disregarding the importance of multilateral trade agreements and international economic partnerships. By prioritizing tariffs and trade wars over collaboration, he risks ceding global leadership to China, which has positioned itself as a more reliable and stable economic partner to many nations.

Straining Alliances and Global Partnerships

Trump’s foreign policy reveals him as a populist, nationalist, and isolationist leader. However, he fails to recognize that America’s global power largely stems from its alliances in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Historically, US strength has been reinforced by a robust network of partnerships that support economic and military initiatives. By making unilateral decisions without consulting key allies, Trump risks alienating crucial partners as well strong neighbour Canada & Mexico and driving them towards alternative alliances, particularly with China and Russia.

For example, sources have disclosed that Trump did not consult with allied leaders and even his cabinet members before announcing his decision to deploy US forces in Gaza for Rebuilding Gaza Plan. Instead, he revealed this move during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This lack of diplomatic coordination has shocked leaders in the Middle East, the Muslim world, and peace-focused nations across Europe, Africa, and Asia. A more seasoned politician, aware of the complexities of global diplomacy, would have sought consensus among allied nations before making such a significant announcement.

Controversial Domestic Decisions and Their Global Impact

On the domestic front, Trump issued numerous executive orders within his first two weeks in office, some of which have sparked significant backlash both at home and abroad. Notable decisions include ending birthright citizenship, curtailing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and pardoning individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. These policies, driven by a nationalist agenda, have drawn criticism even from members of his own party and have contributed to growing tensions with international allies concerned about America’s shifting values.

Cutting Foreign Aid: A Miscalculated Move

One of Trump’s most controversial strategies has been his decision to reduce US foreign aid contributions to various countries, as well as funding to international organizations like the United Nations and the European Union. While his administration argues that these cuts are necessary to prioritize domestic interests, the long-term effects could be detrimental to US global influence. Many of the nations and organizations affected by these budget reductions may turn to China and Russia for support, thereby strengthening America’s geopolitical rivals.

For instance, the reduction in aid to Africa and Latin America could create opportunities for China to expand its presence through financial investments and infrastructure projects. Similarly, a weakened US presence in multilateral organizations may allow China and Russia to exert greater influence over global policies and initiatives.

Sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC)

Trump’s decision to impose economic sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) further illustrates his combative approach to international governance. His administration has accused the ICC of unfairly targeting the US and its allies, particularly Israel. This move has sparked outrage among ICC member states and human rights organizations, further straining diplomatic relations.

Adding to the controversy, the ICC pursued war crimes charges against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu—a topic Trump chose to sidestep during his joint appearance with the Israeli leader. By selectively condemning international judicial bodies while supporting allies accused of serious offenses, Trump risks damaging America’s credibility on the world stage.

The Need for Reassessment

As Trump’s presidency unfolds, it is crucial for his administration to reevaluate its approach to both domestic and foreign policies. A continued reliance on unilateral decision-making, economic nationalism, and diplomatic isolationism could lead to severe long-term consequences, including weakened alliances and diminished US influence in global affairs.

If Trump fails to adjust his strategies, he risks facing widespread opposition from both domestic political forces and the international community. A more balanced and consultative approach—one that prioritizes cooperation over confrontation—will be necessary if the US is to maintain its leadership role in an increasingly multipolar world.
