Tribune International (Report by Syed Atiq ul Hassan, 19 April 2023); In the lead-up to the holy month of Ramadan, preparations begin in Lakemba (Sydney Australia), a popular area of Sydney known as the centre of the Islamic community. For many years, the local council has organized a festival on Haldon Street to mark the occasion, with local businesses and people of various cultures and faiths setting up stalls selling halal food and goods related to Ramadan.
The Haldon Street Lakemba Ramadan Festival has gained widespread recognition throughout Australia, attracting families from far and wide to come and participate in the festivities after Iftar until late at night. The number of attendees has now reached thousands.
This year, with the permission of the local council, Taraweeh prayers were held on the road (Haldon Street), marking a new addition to the history of Lakemba. The prayer was led by Sheikh Abu Bakr Zoud, the Imam of Masjid As-Sunnah Lakemba in Sydney, Australia. Thousands of people gathered to pray together, adding to the sense of community and celebration of Ramadan in this vibrant and diverse part of the city.
