2024 NSW Councils’ Elections: A PLEA FOR PALESTINIAN ADVOCACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Hello members of the Multicultural Communities of NSW:

Syed Atiq ul Hassan

On Saturday, 14 September 2024, the NSW Electoral Commission will be conducting elections for councillors across 126 of the 128 local government councils in NSW. Along with the election of councillors, some councils will also hold mayoral elections, constitutional referendums, and/or polls.

As we approach these elections, I want to share my thoughts and expectations for the candidates. One pressing global issue that deeply concerns all of humanity is the ongoing human rights violations by the Israeli government and military forces against the innocent citizens of Gaza and Palestine. Unfortunately, much of the Muslim world has responded with little more than lip service, holding conferences and forums with limited tangible impact.

I understand that local councillors and mayors have limited influence on the broader geopolitical issues surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. However, it is important to know where these candidates stand on the rights of Palestinians. Will they raise their voices in support of the Palestinian people? And if so, how do they intend to do so? If you receive a satisfactory response from a candidate, I encourage you to support them.

I also invite any candidate in these elections to discuss these concerns with me directly and to share their views on this critical issue.

Yours sincerely

Syed Atiq ul Hassan
