Greens MP to chair public forum against Islamophobia and racism

DrMehreenFaruqi-GreensMPNSW Greens MP Dr Mehreen Faruqi will chair a public meeting on Sunday (November 9, 2014): “Communities United Against Racism: Stop the Politics of Fear”.

The panellists are Lydia Shelley (Islamophobia Register), Fatima Ali (Arab Council NSW), Prof Wendy Bacon (Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, UTS), Stuart Rees (Founder, Sydney Peace Foundation) and Stephen Blanks (NSW Council for Civil Liberties).

According to Dr Faruqi: “It will be great to join community activists and the public to talk about how we can challenge Islamophobia and racism in Australia.

“The political debate on veiling is creating a fear of differences and giving legitimacy to those in our society who have bigoted views, she said.

Dr. Fauqi believes “Now more than ever, we need to come together to say loud and clear that there is no place for racism and prejudice in our multicultural society.”
