Google’s Ramadan companion offers fasting times, food and apps

Google gets into Ramadan spirit, launches My Ramadan Companion

Tech companies are utilizing Ramadan as a platform to connect with users and show that they care for them during the holy month

The month of Ramadan is in full swing and Muslims around the world fast from dawn till sunset. The month brings together families and loved ones to break their fast, share meals, stories and laughter; it is indeed about coming together and sharing moments. For some Muslims, the hard part is being away from their families during Ramadan and keeping them connected is what the search engine giant has been up to.

Google announced the launch of a platform geared toward Ramadan called My Ramadan Companion. The companion’s job is to provide you with tailored local content, information tips, and updates related to Ramadan. This includes sunrise and sunset times around your area in order to prepare for your fast, traffic notifications to highlight the major blockades, fasting tips that include how to maintain a healthy diet and balance the food portions to stay fit during Ramadan. It can also be used to come across new recipes and to share your own, and Google also wants to share other video content courtesy of YouTube, which includes comedy sketches and drama series to watch among others.

“Technology helps more than 200 million Muslims living away from their families connect and share moments with loved ones,” said Zain Kamal Masri, Google’s associate product marketing manager for the Middle East and North Africa.

“People look to Maps to navigate traffic and make it home from work for Iftar, download Google Play apps to plan their day around the sunset and sunrise, and look up Ramadan opening hours of their favorite local shops and restaurants.”
