Netflix exploring ‘House of Cards’ spinoff amid Kevin Spacey allegations

Actor Kevin Spacey is embroiled in Hollywood’s latest sexual misconduct scandal

Hours after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against the TV star Kevin Spacey, Netflix acted quickly and announced that next season of House of Cards will be show’s final season.

The final episodes of the TV series, starring Spacey and Robin Wright as ruthless political operators in the United States government, will air in 2018.

Netflix and producers Media Rights have announced: “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey,” the companies said in a joint statement today. “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

The news comes after Spacey apologised for an alleged attempt to seduce a 14-year-old boy more than 30 years ago, an encounter the two-time Oscar winner denied recalling but attributed to drunkenness as he also came out as a gay man on Twitter.

Netflix spokeswoman Karen Barragan said the determination was made months ago, long before the allegation surfaced against Spacey, 58.

But that doesn’t mean the House of Cards universe is done for good. Variety is reporting that the streaming service is already working to develop multiple spinoff shows:

Variety has learned that the streaming service and producer Media Rights Capital are in very early stages of development on multiple ideas for a potential spinoff. One concept revolves around Doug Stamper, the political aide-de-camp played by actor Michael Kelly in the first five seasons of the political drama, with Eric Roth set to write.

The final season of House of Cards — according to Variety — is currently in production in Baltimore and Spacey is not on set.
