In the lead up to Seniors Week 2014 (Saturday 15 March – Sunday 23 March), NSW Fair Trading Minister Stuart Ayres is encouraging seniors across the state to remember Fair Trading when they need support and services dealing with consumer issues.
Mr Ayres encouraged seniors to attend upcoming Fair Trading events and to remember that advice and help was only a phone call away on 13 32 20.
“Seniors can also lodge complaints at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au,” he said. “Seniors enjoying social media should follow Fair Trading on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/FairTradingNSW and on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NSW_FairTrading.
“The NSW Government is strongly committed to making sure seniors live active and socially connected lives and Fair Trading is always reaching out to help seniors, whether it is through advocacy, education, mediation or compliance work.
“The NSW Ageing Strategy supports individuals to take responsibility for their futures and commits Government to link seniors with relevant information.
“Fair Trading plays an important role implementing this strategy by educating seniors about their rights and responsibilities, about scams, marketplace risks and how to get help,” said Mr Ayres.
During Seniors Week 2014, Fair Trading will host an information stand at the Premier’s Gala Concerts and Expo in Sydney. This event will attract 50,000 seniors over three days.
Fair Trading is also presenting a series of talks at events at Probus and seniors clubs, as well as churches and retirement villages. Information stands at various community and Government events will be staffed by consumer protection experts from the agency. Giveaways and information materials will be provided.
Mr Ayres said this year’s Seniors Week theme, Live Life, was being embraced by the Fair Trading workforce, with a focus on how the agency could better protect vulnerable seniors from scams, as well as ensure all seniors were smart and supported consumers.
NSW Seniors Week is the largest celebration for people aged more than 60 in the southern hemisphere. It’s also for people aged 50 and older who have a lifelong disability or are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
