CALLS FOR RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO BE ADDED TO AUTHORISED WORKER LIST

Sydney (Tribune International, Labor Release,30 July 2021); NSW Labor is calling on the NSW Government to urgently  look at the list of authorised workers to consider allowing Ministers of religion across faiths who live in the

8 restricted local government areas to attend their places of worship for the purpose of live-streaming religious services.

The proposed change to the health orders should only apply if they can demonstrate strict adherence to a COVID safe plan and they are joined by only those performing religious rights and one technician tasked with filming and broadcasting the service.

Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper said for people doing it tough,  the importance of religious services cannot be underestimated.

“The spiritual value of live-streamed services to many of our communities is immense in this time of crisis. In difficult times like this many people seek comfort and support from their religious services.”

“It is important to note that Priests, Imams and Ministers of Religion in the 8 restricted areas are currently already authorised to leave their LGA’s to conduct funerals with up to 10 mourners in attendance, and to give last rites.  This change would be a common sense extension of these duties.

“I will be writing to the Minister for Health today in order for health orders to be amended in time for regular weekend services this Saturday and Sunday.”
