Sydney; Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli and Member for Coogee Bruce Notley-Smith have welcomed teachers back to school for the 2013 year during a visit to Coogee Public School. 
“Whilst students in most schools return to school tomorrow (Wednesday 30 January), I want to thank each and every teacher across all schools at the beginning of this school year. We have a world class teaching workforce here in NSW, and today is a great opportunity to thank our teachers for all the wonderful work they do,” Mr Piccoli said.
“Our teachers are student-focused and they form vital partnerships with parents and caregivers for the educational and social development of their students.
“The campaign launched recently by the NSW Teachers Federation reminds us that ‘it takes a very special person to be a teacher’, and that is so true.
“In my travels I get to see so many principals and teachers going about the daily work of supporting and nurturing each child. During today’s professional development day I spoke with teachers at Coogee Public School about their theme, What Makes a Quality Teacher?
“I was pleased that the teachers had chosen this as their theme, as it will be central to the support we provide and the reform direction the NSW Government will take over the coming years.
“Almost everyone remembers a teacher who made a profound difference in their lives; a teacher who inspired them, who supported them to do their best and encouraged them to learn.
“In order to better support our teachers the NSW Government has provided an additional $25 million over the next two years for professional development to assist with the implementation of the Australian Curriculum.
“I am committed to ensuring NSW continues to have the best teachers and teaching in Australia and this money will assist in that endeavour.
“Later this year the NSW Government will release its response to the Great Teaching, Inspired Learning consultation. The reforms we implement will ensure that we continue to have the best teaching possible for students in all our schools,” Mr Piccoli said.
