Sydney (Press Release): Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams today announced more than $230,000 for 76 festivals and events that celebrate and promote cultural diversity in NSW.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has significantly invested in multicultural community grants, committing an additional $290,000 to the new Multicultural NSW Celebrating Diversity grants program this financial year.
“One of the best ways to connect with diverse cultures and traditions is to participate in the many multicultural activities held all across our State.”
Somali Welfare and Cultural Centre received $10,000 to support the annual Africultures festival.
“Africultures is a free, one day festival that highlights the diversity of the many different African communities in Western Sydney,” Africultures Director Fatma Isir said.
“More than 20,000 festivalgoers attend from all cultural backgrounds to enjoy African arts and crafts, music and food.
“More than 20 mainstream service providers across Western Sydney will be present to inform diverse communities about their services including STARTTS, Anglicare and Sydwest Multicultural Services.”
Other successful events supported by Celebrating Diversity Events grants include:
- Australian Lebanese Football Association soccer tournament for 500 players;
- 10th anniversary celebrations of Bhutanese settlement in Sydney;
- Various 2019 Harmony Day celebrations across NSW; and
- 2019 Holi and Thai Pongal celebrations.
