Qantas to launch non-stop flights from UK to Australia in March 2018
The first non-stop flights from the UK to Australia will begin in March 2018, Qantas has confirmed.
Australia’s flag carrier, Qantas Airways, said it will begin flying directly between Perth and London in 2018, a route that will be one of the longest in the world and the first regular nonstop service between Europe and Australia.
The airline will use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the 17-hour journey, some 70 years after it first began flying to London on its “Kangaroo Route” which originally took four days and included nine stops.
The approximately 9,000-mile flight between Perth and London will take about 17 hours and Qantas expects it to be the third longest flight in the world when it first takes to the air.
“This is a game-changing route flown by a game-changing aircraft. Australians have never had a direct link to Europe before, so the opportunities this opens up are huge,” said chief executive Alan Joyce.
“It’s great news for travellers because it will make it easier to get to London. It’s great news for Western Australia because it will bring jobs and tourism.
Joyce contrasted the new flight with Qantas’ original Australia-to-London service that it introduced nearly 70 years ago. That one was a whole lot slower, taking four days and involving nine stops along the way.
Tourism Council WA chief Evan Hall said he expected the route to bring big benefits.
“It will open a whole new market of people who are going to come to Perth for the first time,” he said, and called on authorities to ensure a seamless experience for travellers.
Qantas said the Perth-London service — at 9,009 miles (14,498 kilometers) — is expected to be one of the longest passenger flights in the world when it goes live.
In February, there will be a new reigning champion for longest flight by duration when Qatar Airways flies from Auckland to Doha, scheduled for 17 hours and 45 minutes.
Tickets for the service go on sale in April next year, with the first flight scheduled for March 2018.
